Syria: Heightened security likely in Al-Hasakah amid continued armed clashes between security forces and Islamic State militants Jan. 24
Curfew enforced in Al-Hasakah, Syria, through at least Jan. 31, amid continued clashes between security forces and IS militants.
Event
Authorities have imposed an 18:00-06:00 curfew in Al-Hasakah city and governorate through Jan. 31 amid reports of continued clashes with Islamic State (IS) militants in Al-Hasakah city. During the curfew, all travel out of and into, Al-Hasakah city and the wider governorate will be prohibited. Officials will also likely continue to maintain a heightened security presence in the city and surrounding area in the coming days. Security forces may close roads and establish checkpoints. Violence could result in damage to local infrastructure, including electricity provision and telecommunications.
Context
Fighting between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and IS militants have been ongoing since Jan. 20, after the militant group launched an attack against Ghwayran prison in Al-Hasakah. At least 100 people, including security forces and members of IS, have been killed. The violence has also displaced residents living near the prison. The Syrian prison housed 3,500 suspected members of IS, including alleged senior figures.
Kurdish officials had long warned the international community that they did not have the resources to house and prosecute the thousands of IS members that have been captured in Syria. The attack on the prison in Al-Hasakah marks the militant group's most significant since it lost most of its territory in 2019.
Advice
Consider deferring nonessential travel to the area until the situation has fully stabilized. Exercise caution if operating in Al-Hasakah and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities. Prepare for movement restrictions, possible telecommunications, and power disruptions, and heightened security measures until at least Jan. 31.
