A magnitude-5.9 offshore earthquake occurred near Torba Province, northern Vanuatu, at around 13:09 Jan. 3. The epicenter was about 109 km (67 miles) northwest of Sola. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 121 km (75 miles) and probably caused light shaking near the epicenter and parts of northern Vanuatu. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties because of the earthquake; however, significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. The event did not prompt any tsunami advisories.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.

Consider vacating multistory buildings where shaking occurred out of an abundance of caution until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Monitor and plan for aftershocks.
