Cross-border movement between Afghanistan and Pakistan at the Torkham border checkpoint is suspended as of Feb. 4 due to protests. Members of the Khugakhel tribe have been blocking access to the checkpoint in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province since Jan. 30 demanding the release of a local leader. Disruptions to passenger transit and cargo transport are likely to continue until the action ends.
Heightened security deployment, as well as further business and transport disruptions, are likely at the checkpoint. Locals on either side of the border may stage additional protests against any prolonged closure of the border. Clashes are possible, mainly if security personnel attempt to forcibly disperse demonstrations.
The affected area is around 69 km (43 miles) east-southeast of Jalalabad, Afghanistan, and about 47 km (29 miles) west-northwest of Peshawar, Pakistan.
