Emergency crews working to contain multiple wildfires in El Salvador; authorities issue nationwide red alert Feb. 21.

Warning

Event

Crews are working to contain multiple wildfires burning in El Salvador as of Feb. 22. The El Salvador General Directorate for Civil Protection issued a nationwide red (highest level) alert Feb. 21 due to the threat of forest fires. Authorities have reported that the number and intensity of forest fires have increased significantly compared to 2021. Approximately 399 fires have been reported, with emergency crews responding to 50 of the fires, Jan. 1-Feb. 14 compared to 120 fire reports over the same period in 2021. As of Feb. 20, fires have affected at least 2,958 hectares (7,309 acres) across the country.

Authorities have warned of moderate to strong northeasterly winds, mainly at higher elevations and the northern mountain range, as well as an abundance of highly flammable dry vegetation, increasing the danger of the intensity and spread of any fires. Authorities should be informed about any fire outbreaks as soon as possible. Residents are prohibited from starting fires in forested or protected areas. Farmers are also prohibited from burning stubble, cane fields, or brush that could get out of control with windy conditions.

Transport
The wildfires may cause some localized transport disruptions across the country. The status of roads may change over the coming hours and days. Authorities could close routes within the wildfire complex and evacuate communities due to fire activity and the needs of response operations. The return of residents could disrupt traffic flows after authorities lift evacuation orders. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region.

Advice

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.
