India: Students plan nationwide protests Feb. 23

Student organization calls for nationwide protests across India Feb. 23. Increased security likely; skirmishes possible.

Warning

Event

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has called for nationwide protests Feb. 23. Participants intend to demand the University Grants Commission (UGC) provide more fellowships to students. The SFI plans to hold protests at universities and colleges, though gatherings are also possible at government buildings, especially Ministry of Education buildings and public squares. Attendance at larger protests may be between several dozen and hundreds of people.

Security personnel will likely monitor gatherings and may try to disperse especially disruptive protests. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Protesters may march along or block roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Allow additional travel time near protests.
