Informational

Event

Members of the Lebanese Association for Parents of Students in Foreign Universities plan to protest outside the UNESCO Palace in Beirut from 09:00 Feb. 21 to denounce the delayed application of the Student Dollar law, which allows transfers of up to USD 10,000 to students overseas at a lower exchange rate. Protesters claim that many students abroad are experiencing financial difficulties as Lebanese banks have blocked their transfers. Dozens to a hundred individuals could attend the demonstration.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the UNESCO Palace the morning of Feb. 21. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse.

Advice

Avoid the protest due to the potential for clashes. Heed the advice of security personnel. Allow additional time if traveling through the affected area Feb. 21.
