Warning

Event

As of Feb. 8, the Mauritanian government is enforcing tighter COVID-19-related international entry restrictions. In order to enter the country, all incoming travelers must be fully vaccinated with a vaccine recognized by the World Health Organization. Vaccination is considered completed 14 days after the second dose for two-dose vaccines.

Domestic Measures
The use of protective masks is mandatory in public spaces, including in markets, cafes, and restaurants, as well as on public transportation. All public gatherings are banned until further notice and theaters are closed.

International Travel Restrictions
Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport (NKC) remains open to limited domestic and international passenger flights. In addition to proof of complete vaccination, travelers to Mauritania must present a printed negative result from a COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before travel. Arrivals may also be subject to temperature screening at airports; persons who exhibit an elevated temperature or display other symptoms of COVID-19 will be tested immediately. All passengers over the age of 11 must present a negative COVID-19 test result before leaving the country.

Travelers exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms could be required to take a PCR test and isolate at their port of entry for 10 days upon arrival. Such individuals will be transported to a secure facility ahead of a possible quarantine period at their own expense. A PCR test will be administered at the facility; travelers who test negative will be allowed to continue with regular COVID-19 travel procedures.

Land borders with Senegal and Mali are reportedly open. Freight travel remains permitted at several border crossings but is subject to enhanced inspections. However, noncommercial overland travel with Morocco remains banned.

Authorities could reimpose, extend, further ease, or otherwise amend any restrictions with little-to-no notice depending on disease activity over the coming weeks.
