Increased security is likely in the Kiko area of Port Moresby as of Feb. 8 after violent clashes occurred in the area the previous day. Reports indicate that the fighting broke out between two ethnic groups the morning of Feb. 7 after youth guards attempted to rob a taxi driver, causing people from another ethnic group to come to his defense. Police intervened and fired warning shots before the crowd dispersed. The violence left one person dead and at least 16 others injured.
Further fighting, including between police and rival groups, is possible. Vandalism may also occur at establishments near future clashes. Officers could erect roadblocks to limit movement in the area and fire warning shots if more fighting takes place. Security measures and skirmishes could cause localized transport and business disruptions at short notice.
