Fighting between rival communities left at least 12 people dead and 11 others injured in Leer County, Unity State, Feb. 16-17. According to local officials, the fighting broke out after armed youth from Leer County attempted to raid cattle from Rubkuay Payam Mayiandit County. Several homes were also burned down and head of cattle stolen during the attacks.
A heightened security presence is likely in the area over the coming days. Further retaliatory attacks are possible in the region over the near term.
