Activists plan to march in Taipei Feb. 28 to mark the 75th anniversary of the 228 Incident. The demonstration will begin at Tianma Tea House from 10:30; protesters plan to pass several landmarks in the city, including the former Monopoly Bureau Taipei Branch and Taipei 228 Memorial, before ending at the Executive Yuan building in the capital's Zhongzheng District. More than 50 civic groups intend to participate in the demonstration. Organizers estimate that around 300 to 400 people will attend, but turnout could be lower due to COVID-19 concerns.
Officials will almost certainly increase security near notable landmarks along the procession route, as well as the Executive Yuan. The event will probably cause localized traffic disruptions. Violence is unlikely, but more radical protesters could attempt to vandalize the statue and other monuments honoring former leader Chiang Kai-shek, which has the potential to trigger clashes between pro- and anti-Chiang supporters.
