Zimbabwe: Political rallies and related violence likely across Zimbabwe through late March
Political rallies and related violence likely across Zimbabwe through late March. Increased security, localized clashes likely.
Event
Political activists, including supporters of the Zanu-PF ruling party and supporters of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) opposition party, will likely continue to stage rallies across Zimbabwe as part of the parties' campaign for the March 26 by-election. Violence is likely during such events, especially at opposition rallies. One person was reportedly killed and up to 17 others injured after alleged Zanu-PF youths gang attacked supporters of the CCC during a rally in Kwekwe, Midlands Province, Feb. 27.
Authorities will almost certainly deploy heightened security along key thoroughfares and near government buildings during political rallies. Security forces will likely resort to forcible measures during opposition rallies and related protests. Disruptions to urban and intercity road travel, business operations, and telecommunications are likely amid significant bouts of civil unrest or preemptive security operations.
Context
Zimbabwe will hold by-elections on March 26 ahead of the general elections scheduled in 2023. 28 MPs and 122 council seats will be elected on March 26. The by-elections are seen as a test for the ruling Zanu-PF party.
Pre-election periods are usually tense in Zimbabwe. Clashes regularly break out between opposition supporters and security personnel and between opposing political groups during such gatherings. Most violence is usually directed towards opposition supporters.
Advice
Avoid all protests due to the likelihood of additional violence. Exercise caution near potential demonstration sites. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent protest-affected areas. Leave immediately and take refuge in a secure, nongovernmental building if violence erupts. Monitor local media for details concerning protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Follow instructions issued by local authorities.
