Jordan: Police responding to riots in Al-Hashemiya, Zarqa Governorate, and Tla al-Ali, Amman, following municipal and governorate elections March 22

Police respond to riots in Al-Hashemiya, Zarqa Governorate, and Tla al-Ali following Jordan's municipal and governorate elections March 22.

Warning

Event

Security forces were responding to a riot in the Al-Hashemiya area of Zarqa Governorate late March 22 following the closure of polling stations for Jordan's municipal and governorate elections earlier in the day. Authorities claimed to be responding to the riot in Al-Hashemiya with "appropriate force." Public security forces also reportedly dealt with an earlier riot in the Tla al-Ali area of Amman; individuals had burned tires in front of a polling station in the area. In total, authorities had arrested some 65 people for electoral security-related violations since early March 22.

Lingering heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely in riot-affected areas over the coming hours. Clashes between rioters and authorities remain possible, particularly if the rioters refuse to disperse.

Advice

Avoid polling stations and riot-affected areas. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent related disruptions. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
