Rwanda, Burundi: Authorities in Burundi keep border with Rwanda closed as of March 10

Authorities in Burundi are keeping the border with Rwanda closed to passenger traffic as of March 10, while Rwanda had previously announced the reopening of all its land borders from March 7. The Rwanda-Burundi border was initially closed in 2015 following a diplomatic row. Officials in Burundi claimed that although they have not yet decided to reopen the border with Rwanda, efforts towards normalizing relations are ongoing.

Road travel from Burundi to Rwanda may be possible due to the reopening of Rwanda’s land borders. Travel from Rwanda to Burundi will almost certainly be disrupted and not allowed to passenger traffic; the movement of goods is likely unaffected.

Context

Rwandan President Paul Kagame announced on February 8 that relations between Rwanda and Burundi will likely normalize in the near term. However, the main obstacle remains Burundi’s request for Rwanda to hand over those allegedly responsible for a 2015 coup attempt in Burundi; the alleged plotters remain in Rwanda. Officials in Burundi stated several times that the request was a prerequisite to fully restoring relations.
