Tunisia: Customs staff plan protests and strikes nationwide through March 11

Tunisian unionized customs workers protesting and striking through March 11; consequent disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

The Union of Customs Agents is taking part in a five-day series of protests and strikes across Tunisia as of March 9. The labor actions began March 7 and will persist through March 11. The work stoppages and demonstrations are being held 09:00-16:00 each day during the protest period. The protest activity is related to a dispute over the fulfillment of labor agreements made in March 2021.

Likely protest venues include government offices, border crossings, airports, and seaports. While lower traveler numbers due to COVID-19 will probably mitigate related disruptions, longer wait times are likely at international entry points should the protests and strikes intensify. Lengthy queues are possible at security and passport screening points for international flights. Maritime freight delays could also occur. Residual disruptions may extend beyond the official protest and strike dates as authorities clear any backlog. Additionally, the demonstrations could prompt localized ground transport disruptions.

Advice

Liaise with trusted contacts and monitor local media for updates on the status of the protest and strike actions. Allow additional time to pass through customs checks if traveling to or from Tunisia on strike and protest days. Maintain flexible schedules if routing freight via Tunisia.
