Tunisia: Workers' Party activists plan protest in Tunis March 19

Workers' Party activists plan protest at Municipal Theatre in Tunis, Tunisia, 15:00 March 19. Increased security likely; violence possible.

Informational

Event

Activists from the Workers' Party have planned a protest in Tunis March 19. Participants are scheduled to gather at the Municipal Theatre on Avenue Habib Bourguiba from 15:00. The action is to denounce the government of President Kais Saied. However, local authorities have banned all protests on Avenue Habib Bourguiba, offering Human Rights Square and other public squares on Mohamed V Street as alternatives.

Additional security personnel will almost deploy to the Municipal Theatre. Security forces will likely erect roadblocks and may close roads around the planned protest site to prevent demonstrators from gathering. Should the protest go ahead at the Municipal Theatre, the threat of violence will be elevated, as police are likely to use force to disperse protesters.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration due to the potential for violence. Exercise caution near likely protest venues. Follow all instructions from police. Immediately leave the area if violence erupts.
