Brazil: Activists to stage pro-government motorcycle rally in the Sao Paulo State April 15

Bolsonaro supporters to hold motorcycle rally in Sao Paulo State, Brazil, early April 15; disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro plan to stage a motorcycle rally on April 15 along Rodovia dos Bandeirantes, a main highway in Sao Paulo State. Participants will gather from 10:00 in front of Sao Paulo's Anhembi Sambadrome in the city of Sao Paulo before driving to the city of Americana. As a result of the rally, authorities will close a large section of the Rodovia dos Bandeirantes between the city of Sao Paulo and Santa Barbara D'Oeste. Significant delays are also expected along several main highways and alternative routes, including Marginal Tiete highway. Road closures and diversions associated with the event are expected to remain in place until at least 15:00 April 15. Bolsonaro has indicated he will personally attend the rally.

Previous similar events have gathered thousands of participants in 2021; Bolsonaro's presence at the rally will likely prompt a significant deployment of police and increase transport disruptions. Counter-demonstrations are also possible; isolated clashes between supporters of opposing political camps cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the rally and any possible counter-demonstrations as a standard security precaution. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in the nearest secure location. Allow extra time for travel in the city of Sao Paulo on April 15.
