Indonesia: Activists plan demonstrations in multiple cities, including Jakarta, April 21 /update 1

Activists plan protests in multiple cities across Indonesia, including Jakarta, April 21. Increased security likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Multiple organizations, including the student group Indonesian Student Alliance (AMI), plan to protest in several cities nationwide April 21. The purpose of the actions is to demand the government monitor preparations for the 2024 presidential elections, acknowledge that President Joko Widodo will not seek a third term, and reduce the price of essential goods, among others. The largest gathering will likely occur in Jakarta, where approximately 5,000 people plan to protest outside the House of Representatives; a student organization of the University of Indonesia also intends to rally in the State Palace area. Reports indicate additional demonstrations will occur at the Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue and the Harmoni area in the capital. Protests will also occur in Bandung and Ternate; activists may rally in other urban centers, such as Makassar, Medan, and Surabaya. Probable gathering locations include government buildings and public squares. Attendance may reach hundreds to a few thousand people.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security at protest sites and surrounding areas. Localized traffic and business disruptions are likely during actions, especially if the activists occupy nearby roads. The police are closing streets nearby the House of Representatives and the State Palace area in Jakarta to facilitate security protocols. Clashes are possible, especially if authorities forcibly disperse the demonstrators. Security personnel fired tear gas and water cannons at protesters during a related rally at the House of Representatives April 11.

Advice

Avoid protest sites, including in Jakarta, April 21 due to possible clashes. Plan for localized traffic and business disruptions. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernment building. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
