Indonesia: Students plan protests nationwide, including in Jakarta, April 21

Student organizations plan protests across Indonesia, including in Jakarta, April 21. Increased security likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Multiple student organizations, including the Indonesian Student Alliance (AMI), plan to hold protests nationwide April 21. The largest protests are likely in major cities and towns. The biggest gathering will likely occur in Jakarta, where approximately 5,000 people are expected to protest outside the DPR/MPR RI building. Other protests may occur at government buildings and public squares; attendance may reach hundreds to a few thousand people. Participants are demanding several concessions, including that the government reduces the prices of essential goods and for the government to agree to monitor preparations for the planned 2024 presidential elections.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security at protest sites and surrounding areas. Localized traffic and business disruptions are likely during actions, especially if the protesters occupy nearby roads. Clashes are possible, especially if authorities forcibly disperse the demonstrators; security personnel fired tear gas and water cannons at protesters gathered at the House of Representatives April 11.

Advice

Avoid protest sites due to possible clashes. Plan for localized traffic and business disruptions. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a safe non-government building. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
