Israeli retaliatory airstrikes target Hamas positions in Gaza, PT, overnight April 18/19. Further violence may occur.

Informational

Event

The Israeli military conducted airstrikes against several targets in Gaza overnight, April 18/19, in response to earlier rocket fire into southern Israel. Israeli officials indicated that Hamas positions were targeted. During the airstrikes, anti-aircraft missiles were fired at the Israeli military aircraft. Gaza-based militants fired at least one rocket toward southern Israel late April 18. The projectile, which reportedly activated sirens in Ein HaShlosha and Kissufim, was intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system. There were no reports of casualties from the rocket fire or subsequent retaliatory attacks.

Heightened security measures are likely in Israel's Southern District April 19. Gaza-based militants may fire additional rockets at communities in southern Israel over the short term. Precautionary measures, such as evacuations, are possible in affected areas. Further retaliatory Israeli airstrikes on suspected militant targets in the Gaza Strip are also possible over the coming hours and days.

Advice

Monitor local media and abide by security forces' directives. If incoming mortar rounds or rockets are reported, or warning sirens sound in the general vicinity, report to the nearest bomb shelter and await further instructions from authorities. If there is no shelter nearby, stay indoors, away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement. Persons in Gaza should consider avoiding nonessential travel near security installations, local administrative buildings, and areas near the shared Gaza Israel border during periods of heightened tensions.
