North Korea to celebrate 110th birth anniversary of founder Kim Il-Sung April 15. Tight security, transport disrputions likely in Pyongyang.

Warning

Event

North Korea will mark the 110th birth anniversary of founder Kim Il-Sung, or Day of the Sun, April 15. Most businesses will close for the holiday, and festivities will likely occur in cities and towns throughout the country. The largest celebrations will take place in the capital, Pyongyang, where thousands of people are likely to attend official performances, parades, and a military procession at Kim Ill-Sung Square.

Extremely tight security is likely in the capital in the lead-up to the event; police and military personnel could conduct increased patrols. Authorities are already employing strict transport controls into Pyongyang due to COVID-19 concerns; officials could restrict travel into the city. During previously major celebrations, the government banned all vehicles registered in other provinces from entering the capital. Security checkpoints are possible on major arteries into the city. The celebrations are likely to cause widespread traffic disruptions in the capital, particularly around Kim Ill-Sung Square. Authorities will also likely block access to nearby metro stations, possibly for days before and after the parade.

Advice

Prepare for heightened security near announced celebration locations. Do not engage in politically sensitive conversations. Carry proper identification at all times and heed the instructions of authorities. If operating in Pyongyang, confirm travel plans, and allow additional time to reach destinations, especially April 15.
