Papua New Guinea: Water outages to continue in Port Moresby as of April 12

Water outages to continue in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, as of April 12. Plan for service disruptions.

Warning

Event

Water disruptions are occurring in parts of Port Moresby as of April 12. Water PNG officials halted water supply April 9 for maintenance works at the Mount Eriama Plant, but authorities suspended service again the following day due to extremely high water turbidity. The utility later discovered additional works necessary at the plant, which are ongoing. Officials are rationing water to areas 1 and 3 until 17:00 and in areas 2 and 4 17:00-21:00; customers may experience low water pressure or no supply. Further disruptions are possible.

The water outages may lead to business disruptions, particularly for companies that rely on large quantities of municipal water to maintain operations.

Advice

Conserve water if supply is available. Stockpile water and use only bottled water from reputable suppliers for drinking and hygienic purposes. Water quality after service resumes may be poor; run taps for several minutes before use. Boil water until officials clear supply for normal consumption.
