Taiwan: Dajia Mazu pilgrimage taking place in western Taiwan through April 17
Dajia Matsu pilgrimage taking place between Taichung and Chiayi, Taiwan, through April 17. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.
Event
The Dajia Matsu Pilgrimage is occurring in several western counties in Taiwan through April 17. The annual event, which traditionally marks the birthday of the Matsu goddess, is taking place with COVID-19 protocols, including facemask and vaccination requirements. Despite the extra measures, more than 100,000 people have received approval to participate in processions carrying a statue of the deity from Taichung to Xingang, Chiayi County. The most significant gatherings are likely at the Fengtian Temple in Xingang, Chiayi County, and Dajia Jenn Lann Temple in Dajia, Taichung. Tens of thousands of people have historically attended events at these sites. The procession follows a set schedule, with segments of the journey taking place on the following days:
April 11: Xiluo-Xingang, Chiayi County
April 12: Fengtian Temple, Xingang
April 13: Xingang-Xilou, Chiayi County
April 14: Xiluo-Beidou, Changhua County
April 15: Beidou-Changhua City
April 16: Changhua City-Xiananli, Taichung
April 17: Xiananli-Dajia
Authorities will likely increase security near temples along the march route. Police could block roads along the pilgrimage route to facilitate the processions, especially in urban areas. Temporary traffic disruptions are highly likely on the procession route, especially Provincial Highway 1 (North-South Highway). Some business closures are possible near temples along the pilgrimage route.
Advice
Exercise caution near temples along the procession route, where more sizeable gatherings are likely. Plan for increased security and localized traffic disruptions in cities where pilgrimage events will occur. Allow additional time to reach destinations, mainly if using Provincial Highway 1. Confirm appointments near event sites.
