Vanuatu: Magnitude-6.2 earthquake strikes off Malekula Island early April 10

A magnitude-6.2 earthquake occurred off Malekula Island in Vanuatu at 07:52 VUT April 10. The epicenter was about 65.2 km (40.4 miles) west-southwest of Norsup. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles) and severe to violent shaking was reported on Malekula near the epicenter, with weak shaking experienced in Port Vila to the south. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, moderate to heavy damage is possible on Malekula and Espiritu Santo islands. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Moderate aftershocks are likely over the coming days.

The event has not prompted any tsunami advisories.
