Afghanistan: Dust storms and strong winds forecast across much of the country through at least May 28
Dust storms and strong winds forecast across much of Afghanistan through May 28. Transport, business, and utility disruptions possible.
Event
Severe weather is forecast across much of Afghanistan through at least May 28. The Afghanistan Meteorological Department has issued a warning due to possible dust storms and strong winds across the country May 26-28. The strongest winds are expected in Balkh, Bamyan, Daykundi, Farah, Ghazni, Ghor, Helmand, Herat, Kabul, Kandahar, Kunduz, Nimruz, Paktia, Paktika, Uruzgan, Wardak, and Zabul provinces. Wind speeds will vary across the country from around 30 kph (19 mph) up to 100 kph (62 mph). Strong winds could cause damage to property, power outages, and whip up dangerous flying debris. Dust storms can reduce visibility and pose a threat to health, especially for those with existing respiratory conditions.
Transport
In addition to posing a direct health risk, large storms can delay air and ground transport operations due to strong winds and low visibility. Dust storms can cause hazardous driving conditions, resulting in traffic congestion and an increased frequency of accidents. Strong winds might also pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles.
Flight delays, diversions, and cancellations are possible at airports across affected regions during periods of severe dust storm activity. Disruptions are typically more severe during rush-hour periods. Poor local driving practices, such as not using headlights at night or failing to allow for a safe distance between vehicles, could compound weather-induced hazards.
Hazardous conditions may prompt school or business closures. Higher-than-normal employee absenteeism is likely in the event of widespread transport disruptions. Residual business and transport disruptions are possible even after weather conditions improve.
Advice
Monitor local media for updated and related weather advisories. Exercise caution while driving and allow additional time to reach destinations. Confirm flights before checking out of hotels or returning rental cars. Plan for possible delivery delays. If operating in areas affected by dust storm activity, consider remaining indoors when possible. Those who must be outdoors should use face masks and observe other precautions to avoid dust inhalation.
