Australia: Adverse weather forecast across southern and eastern Tasmania through at least May 7

Heavy rainfall and strong winds forecast across southern and eastern Tasmania, Australia, through at least May 7. Disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

A low pressure system located east of Tasmania is forecast to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to southern and eastern parts of the state through at least May 7. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds and heavy rainfall from late May 5 through early May 7 across Upper Derwent Valley, South East, East Coast, and Midlands forecast districts, as well as parts of Western, North East and Central Plateau forecast districts. Locations that may be affected by the adverse weather include St Helens, Swansea, Bicheno, Orford, New Norfolk, Bothwell, Hobart, Geeveston, and Dover.

The low pressure system is expected to move over Tasmania May 6, bringing strong southeasterly winds of around 50 kph (31 mph) and damaging gusts of up to 80 kph (50 mph) to southern and eastern regions. Heavy rainfall is expected from late May 5 through early May 7 and could trigger flash flooding in parts of southeastern Tasmania. Six-hourly rainfall totals of 4-6 cm (1.6-2.4 inches) are likely in the affected area, with localized heavier downpours. An initial flood watch has been issued for South East, Huon, Derwent, North, and North East catchments. A marine wind warning has been issued along much of the eastern and southern coastline. Snowfall is also possible across elevated areas of the Central Plateau May 6, with precipitation likely to fall as snow over 1,000 meters (3,281 feet).

Hazardous Conditions
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where the soil has become saturated by heavy rainfall.

Authorities could issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding or wind damage impacts utility networks.

Transport
The severe weather will likely contribute to transport disruptions throughout the region. Traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways. Flooding downpours could inundate some low-lying roads in areas with poor drainage. Strong winds might also pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Hazardous weather conditions might cause flight delays and cancellations at airports in the region, including Hobart International Airport (HBA). Authorities may temporarily suspend port operations if strong winds trigger hazardous sea conditions, impacting freight and passenger maritime traffic.

Advice

Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where flooding has been forecast. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
