Warning

Event

Authorities are carrying out investigations following reports of explosions in the north of Guayaquil, near Penitenciaria del Litoral, early May 20. Police have reported three deaths associated with the incident and have seized drone equipment and at least one vehicle. The explosions reportedly took place on a hill in La Rioja area. Police have not confirmed any arrests in connection to the incident.

Heightened security and traffic disruptions are likely to continue near blast sites.

Context

Two penitentiaries are located in the prison complex, both of which have seen multiple deadly riots in recent months, with a particularly violent September 2021 riot leaving over 110 inmates dead. Two explosions were reported April 23 and 25; no casualties were reported. Most violence in the prison is the result of a struggle between rival gangs to exert influence over the penitentiary.

Advice

Avoid the blast sites until authorities have completed their investigation and given the all-clear. Keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying or gathering. Heed the instructions of security personnel. Transportation disruptions are likely in the area.
