A magnitude-5.5 offshore earthquake occurred near the Ryukyu Islands at around 20:53 May 7. The epicenter was about 136 km (85 miles) west-northwest of Naha. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and light shaking was probably felt throughout the central Ryukyu Islands. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake, and significant damage is unlikely.
