Papua New Guinea: Communal fighting ongoing in Porgera, Enga Province, as of May 9
Communal fighting ongoing in Porgera, Papua New Guinea, as of May 9. Plan for increased security and localized disruptions.
Event
Fighting between the Nomali and Aiyala communities continues in Porgera as of May 9. Delayed reports indicate that the fighting began May 4, though tensions between the two groups have been high over a land dispute tied to the Porgera mine. The most intense fighting is occurring in Paiam town, where attackers have burned as many as 100 houses. Casualty counts vary, but reports indicate that the clashes have killed between eight and 17 people and injured some 50 others since the clashes broke out.
Authorities have deployed additional Papua New Guinea Defence Force troops to the area. Security personnel will likely increase patrols in the area and erect roadblocks in areas where clashes occur. Members of both communities could also clash with security forces; fighters previously exchanged gunfire with police. Additional arson attacks, as well as vandalism and looting, remain possible in the coming days.
Many businesses, especially in Paiam, have closed amid the fighting or are operating on reduced schedules; commercial disruptions are likely until the fighting subsides. Security measures and/or clashes could trigger localized transport disruptions.
Advice
Avoid concentrations of fighters and security personnel due to potential violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately or shelter in place if already at home or your workplace. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional time to reach destinations in Porgera. Confirm road conditions and business appointments before travel.
