Tight security likely in Port Moresby and Lae, Papua New Guinea, amid funeral events through at least May 18. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Authorities will likely impose increased security measures in Port Moresby and Lae through at least May 18 amid funeral events for Deputy Prime Minister Sam Basil. Basil died May 11 following a vehicular accident. Events are taking place at Port Moresby's Sir John Guise Stadium; a state funeral will occur at the site from 14:00 May 17. A private wake will also happen at the Parliament House the morning of May 17. Authorities will then transport Basil's remains to Lae for burial May 18.

Officials will probably deploy additional personnel and intensify security checks in Port Moresby, Lae, and nearby cities through May 18. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely. Air travel and ground transport disruptions may occur at or near Port Moresby International Airport (POM) and Lae Nadzab Airport (LAE), especially as mourners gather nearby the facilities. Locals gathered outside the funeral home and Basil's family residence and erected a roadblock at Markham Bridge in Lae May 13 before authorities removed the barricade; additional gatherings and roadblocks in other locations are possible. Clashes between groups of locals or between locals and security personnel may occur.

Advice

Exercise caution if operating near the event sites in Port Moresby and Lae due to tightened security protocols and likely localized transport disruptions. Plan for possible air and ground travel disruptions at or nearby POM and LAE. Avoid any gatherings due to possible clashes. If clashes break out nearby, immediately depart the area if movement is possible. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
