Heightened security is likely along the Iran-Afghanistan border following reports of violence involving Iranian border guards and the Taliban June 22. Iranian forces opened fire on two children, who were reportedly collecting garbage along the border in Nimruz Province, killing one child and wounding the other. The Taliban captured two Iranian security personnel in retaliation. Afghan officials have also reportedly closed the Silk Bridge border crossing between Afghanistan and Iran.

Protests denouncing the violence are possible in Afghanistan. Likely protest locations include provincial capitals as well as Iranian diplomatic buildings in Herat, Jalalabad, Kabul, Kandahar and Mazar-e Sharif. Dozens to a few hundred people may join protests.

Border and ground travel disruptions will likely occur over the coming days until the situation fully stabilizes; clashes between Iranian and Afghan security forces cannot be ruled out. Security forces will likely monitor gatherings. Protests may result in violence and localized disruptions.
