Chile: Copper workers plan to strike nationwide from June 22

Employees and contractors of Codelco, the state-owned copper company, announced that they would begin a national strike from 07:00 June 22. According to union leaders, approximately 50,000 workers will participate in the walkout, and street protests will likely accompany the labor action, especially in Santiago and near Codelco sites across Chile.

Demonstrations will probably cause localized transport disruptions, and police will likely deploy to monitor any large gatherings. Although most protests will likely be peaceful, clashes remain possible, especially if authorities attempt to disperse demonstrations forcibly. Although union leaders have not announced the strike's duration, it will probably continue through at least June 26.

Context

The unions are protesting a recent government decision to close the Ventanas foundry in the Valparaiso Region following an environmental accident that sickened many in the area. Workers demand that the government upgrade the environmental protection systems at the foundry instead.
