Chile: Government extends the State of emergency in La Araucania and Bio-Bio through July 15 /update 1

Event

Authorities have extended a state of emergency in southern Chile through July 15 in response to violence in the area. The state of emergency applies to the Arauco and Bio-Bio provinces of Bio-Bio Region as well as the entirety of the La Araucania Region. Under the state of emergency, the armed forces are authorized to conduct patrols, prevent violence or blockades on highways, and limit entry to and exit from the affected areas.

Heightened security measures in the area are highly likely, as are transport disruptions; security forces may conduct traffic checks, and Mapuche activists may attempt to blockade roads, particularly smaller roads off major highways. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces or work crews are possible.

Context

Recent weeks have seen several acts of arson, shooting, and robbery, particularly against logging and mining crews, carried out by groups claiming to represent the interests of the Mapuche indigenous people. Armed patrols so far have been mostly on highways.
