Georgia: Pro-EU activists to demonstrate in Tbilisi July 3

Pro-EU activists to demonstrate in Tbilisi, Georgia, July 3; increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

The Pro-EU civil society group "Shame Movement" will lead a demonstration in central Tbilisi on July 3. Participants will gather at the Georgian Parliament at 20:00. The purpose of the action is to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, after he failed to gain EU candidacy status for Georgia, and for the government to implement "de-oligarchization" policies. Attendance could reach the tens of thousands, based on recent precedent.

Additional police will deploy to monitor and facilitate the demonstration. Large crowds and associated security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will likely result in localized transport disruptions in the surrounding area. The action is likely to pass off peacefully though isolated clashes with security services cannot be ruled out.

Context

Pro-EU politicians and protesters demonstrated against their government in Tbilisi June 16, 20, and 24, attracting tens of thousands of supporters. The demonstrations were timed to influence the EU Summit, at which Georgia was not granted "candidate status" but recommended to gain a "European perspective". Campaigners have vowed to continue their demands; further protests are likely.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security authorities and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in the affected area July 3.
