Georgia: Pro-EU activists to demonstrate in Tbilisi June 24

Pro-EU activists to demonstrate in Tbilisi, Georgia, June 24; increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

The Pro-EU civil society group "Shame Movement" will lead a demonstration in central Tbilisi on June 24. The purpose of the action is to show support for Georgia's bid to join the EU and demand the government begin implementing "de-oligarchisation" policies, one of the EU's stated requirements of Georgia before they will grant the country candidate status. Participants will gather at the Georgian Parliament building from 20:00; attendance could reach the tens of thousands.

Additional police will deploy to monitor and facilitate the demonstration. Large crowds and associated security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will likely result in localized transport disruptions in the surrounding area. The action is likely to pass off peacefully though isolated clashes with security services cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security servicers and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in the affected area the evening of June 24.
