Armed criminals fatally shot an Italian national in a robbery in Port-au-Prince June 25. According to reports, the gunmen shot her while she was in a car close to Mosaiques Gardere; she died of injuries at Bernard Mevs Hospital soon after. There are no reports of arrests of the suspects or information on them.

Context

The security situation in Port-au-Prince remains severe and volatile, with high levels of violent crime, kidnappings, gang violence, and civil unrest. Exchanges of gunfire and associated transport and business disruptions continue to occur throughout the capital with little-to-no warning. Gang activity and violent attacks target both security forces and civilians. Areas in and around the capital that are the most severely affected by violent crime include Carrefour, Drouillard, Champs-de-Mars, Croix-des-Bouquets, Laboule 12, Cite Soleil, Martissant, Bel Air, Toussaint Brave, Bas-Delmas, Santo, Torcelle, and Fontamara. Shooting incidents along the airport road are common and can affect travelers going to and from PAP.
