India: Public transport workers plan protests, strike across Kerala State from June 5

State transport workers plan protests, strike across Kerala State, India, from June 5. Transport disruptions likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Unionized workers of the state-owned Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) have called for protests and strikes from June 5 over salary arrears. Activists will hold daily demonstrations from June 5, mainly outside the KSRTC head office in Thiruvananthapuram. Multiple unions have also called for an indefinite work stoppage from June 6.

The highest protest participation is probable in major cities and towns. Popular gathering locations include bus stations, government buildings, and public squares. Dozens to a couple hundred people may join each event. Public bus service disruptions and a related increase in demand for alternative means of transport are likely until strike demands are met. KSRTC officials have indicated that wage settlements may only occur on or after June 19.

Authorities will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely near large protests, especially if participants march along or block roadways.

Advice

Confirm transport reservations and schedules for the duration of the strike. Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently. Allow additional travel time near protests. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
