Heightened security measures are likely and further protests are possible in Makassar following clashes June 8. Papuan student activists gathered at the Mandala Monument earlier June 8. During the planned street march, they were confronted by members of the Indonesian Muslim Brigade (BMI); the group is reportedly opposed to Papuan independence. It is unclear where the clashes occurred. Some reports suggest they occurred near the Mandala Monument and others at the nearby Papuan student dormitory along Jalan Lanto Daeng Pasewang. The altercation left several people injured.
