Mayotte: Increased security measures are likely islandwide through at least late June amid gang violence

Increased security measures are likely across Mayotte through at least late June amid gang violence. Further violence possible.

Warning

Event

Authorities have deployed additional security personnel across Mayotte as of June 11 following gang violence. Clashes occurred between rival gangs in Koungou and Majicavo on June 6 following the earlier stabbing of an individual. At least seven police officers were injured while trying to quell the gang-related violence. Gang members also erected roadblocks in the area.

Further gang-related violence and clashes between security forces and gang members are possible. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely islandwide in the coming days.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of any confrontation. Monitor local media sources for up-to-date information on planned demonstrations. Check for transport disruptions and allow extra time for travel in affected locations.
