Northern Mariana Islands: Pacific Mini Games to take place in the Northern Mariana Islands June 17-25
Northern Mariana Islands to host Pacific Mini Games June 17-25. Increased security likely. Localized transport disruptions possible.
Event
The Northern Mariana Islands will host the XI Pacific Mini Games June 17-15. The event will draw thousands of athletes and spectators from 20 countries and territories in the region. Most events will take place at locations in western Saipan. The opening ceremony will occur 17:30-19:30 June 17 at Oleai Sports Complex; the closing ceremony will also take place at the complex from 17:30 June 25. Athletes will stay at the Pacific Islands Club and Grandvrio Resort in Saipan. The triathlon will occur at venues on Rota Island, while Tachogna Beach in Tinian will hold some beach volleyball matches.
Authorities will increase security near sporting venues during the multiday event. Tight security, including roadblocks, is likely at competition sites, hotels hosting competitors, tourist attractions, and main transport routes. There are no publicized security threats to the Games; however, increased petty crime cannot be ruled out, especially near tourist sites.
Most passengers to the Games will arrive and depart Saipan International Airport (SPN). Intensified identification and baggage searches are likely for passengers. Immigration and customs delays remain possible, especially on days immediately surrounding the beginning and end of the Games, but are unlikely to be significant. Localized ground transport disruptions are likely near Games venues.
Advice
Monitor developments closely if operating in Saipan. Heed all official instructions. Always carry identification. Always be aware of your belongings, especially in crowded areas. Allow ample time for security screenings and customs at SPN. Check with airlines to confirm flight status before departing accommodations. Allow additional time for ground transport, as roads may be congested.
