Communal tensions remain high in Wewak, East Sepik Province, as of June 10 after days of violent clashes. Delayed reports indicate that the fighting began June 5, when a person from the Basis area fired a slingshot projectile at a man from Mengar village. The skirmish injured two other people. The victim later died, prompting a retaliatory attack on the Basis and Dump areas that left three people dead June 6. Fighting resumed June 9, with an attack on the Murick Compound and nearby areas in which properties and homes were destroyed. Officials have yet to confirm casualties from the latest violence. Although authorities and community members are attempting to negotiate an end to the clashes, police have admitted they are overwhelmed by the conflict, which has involved firearms. Many residents are reportedly remaining indoors due to the potential for additional violence.

Officials will likely monitor for further fighting and attempt to disperse disruptive crowds. Authorities could deploy additional security personnel and introduce a curfew if more clashes occur. Skirmishes between police and fighters are possible. Reports indicate that many businesses are operating on reduced schedules or closed after the violence; owners could halt operations without notice if more violence occurs. Security measures and/or crowds could trigger localized transport disruptions.
