Heightened security is almost certain for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2022 in Kigali, Rwanda, June 20-25.

Warning

Event

Officials will almost certainly increase security in Kigali and surrounding locations ahead of and during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2022 in Kigali from June 20-25. Thousands of delegates, including some heads of state, are scheduled to arrive and participate in meetings. The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has indicated that certain roads will be temporarily closed at times to allow for the movement of delegates. Updated schedules will be posted online. These are available by clicking here.

A visible security presence is likely near major hotels, major routes, conference centers, embassies, and Kigali International Airport (KGL) for the duration of the event. Additional checkpoints and patrols are likely. Temporary road travel restrictions could increase traffic congestion on alternative routes. The arrival and departure of delegates at KGL could lead to some short-term disruptions at the airport. Flight delays and cancellations for normal scheduled flights could occur.

Advice

Heed the directives of the local authorities. Check the status of road routes before departure. Travel with identification documentation. Reconfirm all flights via KGL and plan for airport processing delays.
