Tunisia: Fuel distribution companies to strike nationwide June 9-11

Unionized fuel distribution companies announce nationwide strike in Tunisia June 9-11. Fuel shortages possible if strike is not averted.

Warning

Event

Four fuel distribution companies affiliated with the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) have announced plans to strike nationwide, June 9-11. The labor action comes amid a breakdown in negotiations over salary increases between the striking companies and authorities. Unless averted, the labor action could result in nationwide fuel supply shortages. While there have been no calls for associated protests, strike-related demonstrations or pickets cannot be ruled out.

Context

Strikes and labor-related protests are common throughout Tunisia. Labor unions frequently use strikes, or the threat of a strike, to pressure government officials into concessions; however, most strikes are quickly averted after last-minute negotiations.

Advice

Stock up on fuel ahead of the announced strike. Ensure enough fuel for a return journey before driving long distances, particularly in rural areas.
