Tunisia: Labor union calls for nationwide public sector strike June 16

Tunisia's largest labor union calls for nationwide public sector strike June 16; related protests, increased security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) has called for a nationwide public sector strike June 16. The purpose of the action is to denounce the country's increasing inflation rate and demand guarantees that state-owned companies will not be privatized as the government attempts to secure a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

While organizers did not immediately announce any plans for associated demonstrations, strike participants are nonetheless likely to stage rallies during the labor action. Likely rally locations include central squares and public spaces outside of government offices. Police will likely deploy to monitor any such demonstrations that may materialize. Large crowds and associated security measures, including road closures and movement restrictions, will likely result in localized transport disruptions. Isolated clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Plan accordingly for disruptions to various services and business operations, as well as for increased employee absenteeism, June 16. Confirm public transport operating schedules, air and rail travel arrangements, and medical appointments. Allow extra time to reach destinations. Avoid any demonstrations that may materialize.
