UK: Nationwide strike by unionized rail workers planned for June 21, 23, and 25

Unionized rail workers plan strike action across the UK June 21, 23, and 25. Major travel disruption likely. Confirm rail services.

Informational

Event

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RNT) has called on rail workers in the UK to observe three days of strike action on June 21, 23, and 25. RMT has organized the strike to demand increased pay and assurances of no compulsory job losses. Strike action on June 21 will impact the London Underground (Tube), Network Rail, and all train operating companies. Strike action on June 23 and 25 will impact Network Rail and all train operating companies; however, the Tube will operate normally.

The strikes, should they go ahead, will cause significant disruption to the UK's rail network; only around 20 percent of rail services will run on strike-affected days. Lingering disruptions will likely affect rail services after each strike concludes as operators reposition rolling stock. Available rail services will likely experience crowding, while significant congestion is likely on alternative means of transport. RMT workers may organize demonstrations, which may cause localized disruption.

Context

The government is seeking to transform rail services, given reduced passenger numbers and high subsidies after the COVID-19 pandemic, and have not ruled out up to 2,500 job cuts. Negotiations between RMT and the government have stalled; nonetheless, strike action could be averted if the parties make progress.

Advice

Avoid travel on the affected days. For essential travel, confirm rail services and allow extra time for journeys. Consider alternative transport and book reservations in advance due to increased demand. Follow local travel advice.
