Rail workers plan industrial action in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 00:01-04:00 July 28. Plan for disruptions.

Warning

Event

Rail, Tram, and Bus Union (RTBU)-aligned rail workers plan to strike from 00:01-04:00 July 28 in Sydney, New South Wales (NSW), amid an ongoing dispute with transport officials over wage and safety concerns. Unless averted, trains along the entire Sydney Trains passenger rail system, including the Intercity and Sydney Freight Network, will be impacted.

Commuters traveling from the South Coast, Southern Highlands, Newcastle, Hunter, and Blue Mountains will likely be impacted most. Transport NSW has reduced timetables through the evening of July 27 and warned that significant disruptions are possible. Authorities anticipate train operations to normalize at approximately 08:00 July 28.

Increased demand for alternative transport, including taxis and ride-hailing services, is probable during the industrial action. High private vehicle use could lead to traffic congestion on main routes, particularly in Greater Sydney. Delivery and shipping delays are likely during the labor actions.

Union members could also hold rallies during the labor action. Gatherings could take place near Parliament House in Sydney or prominent train stations. However, such demonstrations will probably remain small.

Advice

Consider using alternative transport for time-sensitive travel. Allow extra time to reach destinations due to increased traffic congestion and demand for alternative transport.
