A magnitude-5.7 earthquake occurred in western Ecuador around 18:30 July 14. The epicenter was about 20 km (12 miles) northeast of Guayaquil. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 80 km (50 miles). Light to moderate shaking was reported near the epicenter, with light shaking probably being felt in parts of Guayas, Santa Elena, Camara, Azuay, Chimborazo, Bolivar, Los Rios, and Manabi provinces, and weak shaking possible as far north as Quito. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties; significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible where shaking occurred.
