Event

Emergency crews continue to respond to two significant wildfires south of Bordeaux in Gironde Department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region as of July 17. Both fires broke out July 12 in the communes of La Teste-de-Buch and Landiras. More than 1,200 personnel are on-site battling both blazes. The fires broke out amid an ongoing heatwave that is expected to last in southwestern France through at least July 19. Temperatures in Gironde are forecast to peak at up to 41 C (106 F) July 18. The hot and dry conditions could lead to further fire growth over the coming days.

The fire in Landiras is burning in an area of pine forest and has grown to over 7,200 hectares (17,791 acres) as of July 17. Around 4,100 residents were evacuated in the surrounding areas. Officials state the situation is stabilized on two sides but warn of unfavorable conditions on the front-right flank.

The fire in La Teste-de-Buch commune is burning in the Arcachon Bay area and is more than 3,400 hectares (8,401 acres) in size. Authorities evacuated over 10,000 people in the vicinity of the fire areas. Authorities state the situation is unfavorable; further fire growth remains possible.

Several roads have been closed in recent days, including parts of the D115, D125, and D218. Emergency responders may close roads in affected areas at short notice depending on evolving wildfire conditions and operational needs. Smoke from the fire could cause poor air quality. Authorities may issue additional mandatory evacuation orders at short notice. The fire could also lead to power supply disruptions.

Advice

Heed any evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will likely cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.
