Flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rainfall are causing disruptions across parts of coastal Karnataka as of July 7. Further downpours are forecast in the region over the coming days and could lead to additional flooding, landslides, and associated disruptions.
Authorities have confirmed three fatalities following a landslide in Dakshina Kannada District late July 6. Another person was injured in the landslide which occurred in the Bantwal area of the district. Flooding has caused damage to several homes and roads in the region. Schools and colleges across the region have been closed by authorities July 7. At least two flights were delayed at Mangaluru International Airport (IXE) July 6 due to adverse weather and further flight disruptions are possible in the coming days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red (the highest level on a four-tier scale) weather warnings for heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds for coastal Karnataka July 7-8. Orange heavy rainfall and strong surface winds have been issued across the region July 9-10. Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.
Hazardous Conditions
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rainfall has saturated the soil.
Authorities could issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding or landslides impact utility networks.

Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges and roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Severe weather could also trigger flight delays and cancellations at airports in the affected region.
