Rescue operations ongoing following avalanche in Marmolada Glacier in the Dolomites of northeastern Italy as of early July 4.

Warning

Event

Rescue operations are ongoing as of early July 4 following an avalanche in the Marmolada Glacier in the Dolomites of northeastern Italy. A block of glacial ice collapsed on the Marmolada glacier July 3 along the ascent to the summit. Authorities have confirmed at least six fatalities and eight injuries. Search and rescue operations are underway; at least 10 people still missing. The official casualty count is likely to rise; rescue operations will probably take several days.

Authorities are evacuating the mountain due to fears of further collapses. The Italian Meteorological Service has issued yellow thunderstorm warnings across northeastern Italy through at least July 6. Thunderstorms and heavy rainfall could hamper rescue and recovery efforts or lead to additional avalanches.

Advice

Monitor local media for updated emergency and weather information. Follow all evacuation orders and official instructions. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Exercise caution when navigating flood-prone areas; seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area. Plan for increased congestion and delays due to road closures. Charge battery-powered devices in case of prolonged power outages.
