Lebanon: Public sector employees affiliated with the General Labor Confederation participating in general strike through Aug. 2
General Labor Confederation launches general strike across Lebanon through Aug. 2. Disruptions likely, associated protests possible.
Event
As of July 28, public sector employees affiliated with Lebanon's General Labor Confederation have launched a nationwide strike through at least Aug. 2. The reason for the labor action is to demand greater pay. While organizers have not announced any protests, demonstrations are possible at popular protest locations across the country.
Disruptions to government services are likely during the strike. Localized transport disruptions are possible near any demonstrations that materialize in urban centers, especially if protesters march along or block roads. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse.
Advice
Reconfirm appointments at all public sector offices through Aug. 2. Avoid any possible protests due to the potential for clashes. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings.
